A beautiful pair of Sterling Silver and Bristol blue glass salt cellars made in Chester by James and William Deakin. They were manufacturers of silver and silver plate amd were founded by James Deakin in Sheffield in 1866.The first mark was registered by the firm in the Sheffield Assay Office on 31 January 1878. It was 'JD' over 'WD' and possibly represented the partnership of James Deakin and his son William Pitchford Deakin. In 1886, two further sons joined the partnership, John and Albert, and the firm was then known as James Deakin and Sons. Since this hallmark shows the 'JD' over 'WD' mark, I believe that they were made between 1878 and 1886.
